Chapter Four

"Where's Robert?" Marcus asked as they rode out over the drawbridge, the hooves of the horses clattering loudly on the wooden planks.

Aiden shushed him quickly before replying in a soft tone. "Sulking like a girl last time I saw him."

"What did you do?"

Aiden gave his friend an affronted look. "Do? I didn't do anything."

"What did you say then? You must have upset him somehow."

"Don't you have any faith in me?"

"Not a jot. What upset him?"

Aiden gave a haughty sniff. "I don't wish to talk about it."

"You know I'll nag you worse than a fishwife until you tell me. You might as well spill the beans now and save yourself the earache."

"You can't nag me if you can't keep up with me," Aiden replied as he spurred his horse into a gallop, leaving Marcus coughing on his dust.

He didn't want to talk about what had happened between himself and Robert. He was still confused about why his new lover had become so angry, especially after the night they had shared. His breeches tightened as he recalled his wanton responses in the bedchamber. How could Robert believe he had a problem with him being a man after the passion of the night before?

"Aiden, wait!" Marcus yelled from some distance behind him.

Aiden slowed down the pace, though more in the interests of his horse than because he wanted Marcus to catch him. A few minutes later Marcus drew his own steed alongside Aiden's.

"Care to explain what that was all about?" Marcus asked conversationally.

"Can't we just enjoy the ride without all the questions?"

"Would you enjoy it, knowing Robert is back at the castle, upset about something you've said or done?"

"You never give up, do you?"

"Not when my best friend's happiness is at stake. Come on, tell me what happened."

Aiden sighed with resignation. He'd not have a moment of peace until he told Marcus what had transpired. He filled him in, minus the more intimate details of the night before and waited for Marcus to agree with him that Robert was being entirely unreasonable.

"Did you bed him?"

"Marcus!"

"Did you?"

"Not exactly."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one you're getting."

Marcus brought his horse to a halt and turned to give Aiden his full attention. "So, can I assume that if you didn't actually do the deed, you at least came close?"

"Fine, yes."

"Then this morning Robert was throwing your riding boots at you for no reason at all?"

"He seems to think I'm not happy about him being a man, when it should be obvious from last night that I am."

"Why didn't you want him to come riding with us?" Marcus asked. "He seems a pleasant man, and I'd like to get to know him better."

"His riding habit hasn't been made yet."

"What does he need a riding habit for? Can't he borrow something of yours?"

"I don't have any women's clothes in my closet."

"I never said you did, but I think I know why Robert is angry with you."

Aiden folded his arms and tapped his fingers impatiently. "Care to enlighten me?"

Marcus laughed.
